It was to be an escape into a timeless place removed from the cares of the outside world.Situated at the lowest terminus of a large cul-de-sac, a concrete flume directs all run-off from the street through the main gardens. Erosion control was also an issue in the sloping front yard, as the home was sited well down slope from the street, purposely to enhance the privacy and seclusion sought by the clients. Achieving a feeling of intimacy and seclusion in the full acre side garden was also part of the challenge.

Over 30 tons of Colorado moss boulders and river jacks line the dry creek bed and stabilize the washes cutting through the large garden.

Vigorous perennials and flowering shrubs spread their roots and cascading branches, anchoring the front slope over a 10 foot drop from the street to the threshold.

The view from the client's front door, a mural of seasonal splendor framed by a pair of Japanese Tree Lilacs.

The entire front slope at street side belies the presence above of pavement and prying eyes. From the massive vertical border, a path leads to the woods beyond.

A footbridge at the base of the flume provides access over the upper creek bed and a charming transition from the side terraces to the pathways of the large woodland garden.

The journey of the dry creek bed, (barely visible at left through the lush growth of perennials) is mirrored by the path into the garden on the right.

The cool path narrows and widens, but always beckons the stroller or the sojourner...toward whatever lies around the next bend.

The paths split in three directions...but four choices...choose one, or pause to ponder this magnificent dilemma in the cool shade of aged Bur Oaks.

The client's love of whimsical garden ornaments is evident throughout. The Queen of Hearts appears indignant at being upstaged by a majestic stand of lilies and dwarfed by the lush foliage of hosta and ajuga.

Stately Oakleaf Hydrangeas obscure the dry creek bed as a splendid Red Japanese Maple in a sea of perennial blossoms beckons from the top of the path.

Arriving back at the top of the garden one relishes the harmony of man and nature and the joy of the journey through a magical place.

Numerous species of large flowering shrubs create cool meandering "hallways" revealing a lovely place to linger awhile and a tempting hint of mysterious places beyond.

The journey is meant to be both exhilarating and soothing, intimate and awe-inspiring...the homeowners' personal and private "dream garden come true."
