This project evolved over a 3 year period, phasing from front yard to
back. The existing site included a vast expanse of lawn sloping down to
native woods and undergrowth. The clients sought a family retreat surrounded
by soaring walls of lush foliage framing an opulent display of season-long
vibrant color.
The site location on the edge of Fontenelle Forest presents an ongoing
challenge to protect the landscape from herds of ravenous deer and rabbits.
The owner did not want the look or feel of being fenced in. High black
chain link fencing was discretely erected in the wild undergrowth beyond
the formal landscape.
The European Manor style of the home and circle in the front walk suggest
the romantic elegance of the parterre design in the entrance courtyard.
Barberry provides colorful yet undemanding definition to the courtyard
parterre. Upright and dwarf globe Arborvitae form the outer framework
of the garden.
The garage wall no longer dominates the front facade as it is upstaged
by lush foliage and the enormous, long-lived blossoms of ‘Annabelle'
Hydrangeas.
The walls were expanded to the edge of the drive, completing the staging
for the terraced perennial garden. A kaleidoscope of color in ever-changing
hues billows over and through the stone walls from early spring to late
fall.
The classic lines of the new lap pool echo the elegant style of the front
yard parterre. Massive boulders anchor the slope at poolside, while a
cast stone stairway provides access to the cutting garden.
The rock garden and raised planter showcase a vertical presentation of
annuals, perennials, bulbs, and flowering shrubs, spring through fall.
Lovely in all seasons, Amur Maples frame the view down into the cutting
garden and ease the transition from the formal landscape.
The conversion of a vast expanse of lawn into a more secluded family play
area began with the addition of the Pool.
The imposing structure has become merely the fourth wall on the stage
of the family's intimate outdoor living space.
