We’re Snowed In

Winter has arrived with authority in the middle of the country, we have 12″ of snow on the ground that arrived with 45 MPH winds and 5 foot deep drifts. To top it all off, we have sub zero temps to keep it around for a long time. So we are just nestling in for the holidays. The Christmas decorations are up, invitations for some small holiday get togethers are going out and the menus being planed. In the larder are some Prime rib roasts, turkey and fixing and lots of baked goods.

Environmental Improvement Grand Award

PLANET (Professional Landcare Network) Awarded Estate Gardeners Inc. the Prestigious Environmental Improvement Grand Award for the Scott Residence. This is the top recognition for Landscape companies that do outstanding work and the customers that pay for it. We are incredibly honored to accept our second Grand Award for our work in Omaha. Michael will receive the award at a reception in Louisville Kentucky on October 30th. You can view a gallery of the awards presentation here. This project took 8 years to reache the stage it is in now and it is getting better every year.

The frost got the tomatoes but there are some crops, like butternut squash to still pick. Our tomatoes yeilded 90 quarts canned a bunch frozen and lots of BLTs and salads. We always feel smug having spaghetti in February made with our own home grown tomatoes. this year we grew Big Mama, Beefy Boy, and our all time favorite for quality and production, Celebrity. Pat thinks she harvested over 1000 tomatoes. That’s between 400 and 500 lbs.

Fall Fertilize your turf

Fertilization of turf in the fall can be the most beneficial application all season long….. In fact, if you are going to fertilize your lawn once a year, make it now. You will get an earlier green up and a thicker healthier lawn in the spring.

Prune with caution this time of year

The only thing you really want to be pruning this time of year is perennial foliage that has died back with frost. Its not necessary, but it can help manage disease, and look tidy over the winter. BUT BEWARE! Many perennials, especially grasses add interest and habitat all winter long, so leave them up for a true 4 season garden.

Let’s Plant Trees

It is often said the best time of year to plant trees is the spring, the second best time of year to plant trees is today. It is true that spring is a great time for planting, but with rare exceptions, most trees transplant perfectly until late in the fall and most professional arborist actually recommend fall as the optimal planting time. There are still a lot of trees available but you might need to be flexible on the type of tree you buy. If your taking a chance on a borderline hardy tree or a true water lover, you might want to wait until next spring. Regardless of what you plant you will want to water regularly until the ground is completely frozen, and be prepared to get some water to on those warm winter days throughout the season.
